Perspective Internship and Practicum Students

Letter to prospective internship and practicum students,

We are honored to be considered for your internship and practicum at the Owen Clinic. I want to provide you with some important details about our program. Firstly, it’s essential to note that we conduct interviews for internship and practicum positions twice a year, in December and June. If you’re interested in joining us, you can submit your resume or request an interview by emailing us at theowenclinic@gmail.com. You can send resumes and CV’s any time though.

Now, let’s delve into what you can expect during your time here. Due to the size and client volume of our clinic, we only accept two or three practicum/internship students at a time. This ensures that we can adequately meet your needs for hours and sessions.

We have a structured timeline in place, aiming for completion within 8 months. We understand the importance of pacing in your education, and while we enjoy having you here, we must adhere to this timeline. However, we’re open to discussing individual circumstances, and on a case-by-case basis, we can consider extensions if necessary. Remember, this is a part of your journey towards becoming a therapist, and while we’re here to support you, all good things must come to an end eventually. But fear not, as you’re always welcome to apply for a job with us upon completing your degree plan.

Let’s talk about professionalism. Education is a pivotal part of your journey, and while we aim to be flexible to accommodate your needs, we expect a high level of professionalism in return. While internship/practicum is a requirement for your education, taking on internship/practicum students is elective for us. Therefore, it’s crucial to approach your time here with gratitude and an understanding that accommodation is not an entitlement but a privilege.

In terms of clinical modalities, we primarily practice empirically supported techniques such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy, Reality Therapy, and Prolonged Exposure Therapy. However, our team is well-versed in various other modalities. You’ll have the opportunity to work with a diverse range of clients, including individuals, couples, and families spanning all age groups from 4 to 100 years old.

We hold weekly meetings to discuss cases and protocols, as well as offer training in ethical considerations and evidence-based modalities. The timing of these meetings will be based on the availability of your supervisor.

Your time at the Owen Clinic is likely to be both enriching and challenging. Approach it with dedication, professionalism, and an open mind, and you’ll undoubtedly gain valuable experience that will serve you well in your future endeavors as a therapist.
