Now I Have Questions
In this weeks video counselors Dr Kevon Owen and Jack Smith are talking about “Now I Have Questions”.
Cognitive dissonance. You may have heard this term but do you know what it means and how it may or may not apply to you?
The following is from Wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_dissonance.
In the field of psychology, cognitive dissonance is the perception of contradictory information. Relevant items of information include a person’s actions, feelings, ideas, beliefs, values, and things in the environment. Cognitive dissonance is typically experienced as psychological stress when persons participate in an action that goes against one or more of those things.
According to this theory, when two actions or ideas are not psychologically consistent with each other, people do all in their power to change them until they become consistent.
The discomfort is triggered by the person’s belief clashing with new information perceived, wherein the individual tries to find a way to resolve the contradiction to reduce their discomfort.
This explains it so much better than I ever could. Start being honest with your self and realize your current beliefs and what you know may have another answer and be open to change.
To seek help from a licensed professional counselor will be very helpful. Sometimes we just need that other person to help us see what we need to see and know.
